Not sure which attestation service you need in Dubai? Find the right option for employment, family visas, education, business, MOFA, true copy or equivalency.
Most people who contact an attestation office in Dubai do not have a document problem. They have a naming problem. They have been told to “get it attested”, “get a true copy”, “do MOFA”, “get an equivalency” and “translate it into Arabic”, sometimes in the same sentence, and they cannot tell which of these they actually need.
This guide is built to fix that. Instead of explaining every service in full, it starts from your situation (a job, a family visa, a business, a study plan) and points you to the one or two services that apply.
Quick answer: the right service depends mainly on two things, who is receiving the document and what kind of document it is. Check those first, and most of the confusion goes away.
Why a Foreign Document Has No Legal Standing in the UAE Until It Is Verified
A foreign-issued document has no legal standing in the UAE until it has been verified by the authorities. For most documents that means a chain of checks, and the details depend on the country where the document was issued. In short, the chain usually runs from a notary, to the home country’s foreign ministry, to the UAE Embassy or Consulate, and ends with MOFA attestation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ final verification.
Two points are worth knowing before you go further:
- MOFA’s newer digital attestation track applies to eligible UAE-issued documents. Foreign certificates, including Indian ones, still go through the courier-based chain, although the completed result now arrives as a verifiable QR code.
- Attestation proves a document is genuine. It does not translate it, certify a copy, or confirm that a degree meets UAE academic standards. Those are separate services, and most of the confusion comes from mixing them up.
What Are You Using the Document For? Work, Family, Study or Business
Requirements differ across personal, educational and commercial documents, so start with what you are trying to do.
Documents Needed for a UAE Employment Visa
Employers and the labour authorities mainly want to see that your qualifications and background are genuine. An employment visa file usually needs your degree or diploma certificate, an experience certificate where the employer or visa category asks for it, and a police clearance certificate. The PCC is now mandatory for Indian nationals applying for a UAE employment visa.
If your work is regulated, the regulator adds its own checks on top of attestation, and which regulator depends on your profession. Nurses, for example, are licensed through DHA, DOH or MOHAP rather than a general labour office. Engineers register with the Society of Engineers. Teachers in Dubai private schools need KHDA approval before they can take a classroom.
If you are an employer rather than an employee, attesting documents before hiring expats keeps a visa file from stalling after the offer is made.
Documents Needed for a UAE Family Visa (and the Arabic Translation Catch)
Family visa files are built around civil-status documents, not qualifications. The set for sponsoring a spouse, children or parents is built on the marriage certificate, a birth certificate for each child, and in some cases a divorce or death certificate, depending on the family’s circumstances. Each birth certificate is handled as a separate file.
Family files also often need an Arabic version, and people usually find that out late. Many applicants complete marriage certificate attestation for a spouse visa and only then learn that an Arabic translation is also required, so check this before you start.
How the document set differs from a work visa file is laid out in attestation for job visa vs family visa in the UAE, which is worth checking before you assume the two are alike.
Documents Needed for School and University Admission in the UAE
Schools and universities typically ask for academic and identity records. For school and university admission, that usually means a transfer certificate for school moves and degree or diploma attestation for higher study. A child’s birth certificate is often part of the same file, and birth certificate attestation follows the same chain as other personal documents.
Documents Needed for Business Setup and Trade Licence
Business paperwork follows a different route from personal documents, and the checks are often handled through chambers of commerce and other bodies. A power of attorney is one of the documents that often needs an Arabic translation, because courts, banks and land offices work in Arabic. Company records such as the memorandum and articles of association are covered under business setup and trade licence attestation.
Service Finder: Which Dubai Document Service Solves Your Problem?
Once you know your purpose, this table shows which service solves which problem.
| Your situation | Service you probably need |
| A foreign-issued document must be accepted by a UAE authority | Full certificate attestation |
| The final UAE-side verification step | MOFA attestation |
| An Indian document that needs the embassy stage before it goes to the UAE | UAE Embassy attestation in India |
| An office wants a certified copy, not the original | True copy attestation |
| A UAE office wants the document in Arabic | Arabic translation plus MOJ attestation |
| Your degree is attested, but a regulator wants proof of academic standing | MOHESR equivalency |
| An old attestation is being questioned at visa renewal | Re-attestation |
| A submission was refused | Diagnose the rejection first, then correct it |
5 Mix-Ups That Send Applicants to the Wrong Service
These are the points where people most often pick the wrong service.
Is an Apostille Enough for the UAE?
An apostille is a Hague Convention stamp. The UAE is not a member of that convention, so an apostille on its own is not enough for UAE use, whichever country issued the document. If someone has told you your apostilled document “should be fine”, treat that as a risky assumption.
True Copy vs MOFA Attestation: Two Different Questions
A true copy certifies that a copy matches the original. MOFA attestation is the final government verification of a document’s authenticity, so true copy attestation and MOFA attestation answer different questions, and one does not replace the other. One practical point: attestation on photocopies is not allowed in India, although it is possible in several other countries, so check this before you copy anything.
Degree Attestation vs Equivalency Certificate: Which Does Your Regulator Want?
Attestation proves your degree is genuine. Equivalency is a separate assessment of whether it meets UAE academic standards, and it applies only in some professions and for some regulators. One does not replace the other, and the difference between degree attestation and an equivalency certificate decides which you need. Doctors holding an MBBS or other medical degree face DHA or MOH checks as well.
Degree vs Diploma Attestation: Why the Wrong Choice Delays Visas
The two follow different requirements, and choosing the wrong one can delay a visa file, as degree certificate vs diploma certificate attestation shows. If your degree was earned through distance learning, acceptance depends on the programme, as covered for distance, online and UGC-DEB degrees.
Attestation vs Arabic Translation: Two Checks on Two Different Things
Attestation verifies the original document. Translation by an MOJ-licensed translator makes it readable for a UAE office, and the MOJ then attests the translator’s signature, not your certificate. They are two checks on two different things.
Pre-Submission Checklist: 4 Document Problems That Cause Rejections
Most rejections we handle come from preventable problems in the document itself, not from the process. Before you begin, check these four things:
- Names. Spell them exactly as they appear in your passport. A mismatch is one of the most common avoidable causes of rejection.
- Lamination. Attestation departments do not stamp fully laminated documents. If yours is laminated, find out your options before submitting.
- Final versions only. Use the final certificate, not a provisional one.
- Completeness. The documents required for certificate attestation in Dubai differ by document type, so check the list for yours.
This is why we verify each document before submission.
How Long Does Attestation Take and What Does It Cost?
Timelines and costs depend on the issuing country, the document type and the stage at which a file is stuck, so we avoid quoting one number here. The certificate attestation timeline in Dubai sets out what to expect at each stage, and for Indian documents the embassy stage has its own charge, broken down in UAE Embassy attestation fees in India.
6 Questions That Tell You Exactly Which Service You Need
If you want the whole guide in a few lines:
- Who is receiving the document? An employer, an immigration office, a school, a bank or a licensing body each have their own rules.
- Where was it issued? This decides the route. Foreign-issued documents go through the full chain.
- Is it the original or a copy? If a copy is acceptable, you may need true copy attestation instead.
- Is it in English or Arabic? If it is in neither, translation comes first. If the receiving office wants Arabic, plan the translation and MOJ step.
- Does the receiver want more than proof of authenticity? That is when equivalency or a regulator’s own review comes in.
- Has it been attested before? Older attestations can be questioned at renewal.
Dubai Document Attestation FAQs
Do all foreign documents need attestation for the UAE?
Documents issued outside the UAE and used for official purposes generally do. It is a legal requirement, not a formality, and the exact route depends on the issuing country and the document type.
Is true copy attestation the same as normal attestation?
No. True copy certifies a copy against its original. Standard attestation verifies the original through government authorities.
Can I skip steps to save time?
No. Each stage checks the stamp before it, so skipping a stage can invalidate the chain.
Does an attestation expire?
Attestation itself has no legal expiry date, as long as the underlying document remains valid. A receiving office may still ask you to re-attest an older document, usually when it is being used for a new purpose.
Can I handle this myself, or should I use an agency?
You can do it yourself, but one wrong step can send you back to the start, and courier and resubmission costs add up. Individual vs agency attestation lays out the trade-offs.
What if I still can’t tell which service I need?
Ask the office receiving the document what they will accept, and get it in writing if you can. Rules and fees are revised regularly, so confirming with the receiving office, or through MOFA’s own attestation service page, is the safest check before you spend money.
